We believe that 3D People heavily enhance the vividness and realism of any 3D visualization, whether archviz, games, VR, AR, or any other possible application. Human interaction is a core part of life, so every digital environment needs human avatars – 3D People – to create an immersive experience as authentic and lifelike as the real world. Pioneering Technology

Cutting-edge technology is the foundation for the creation of 3D People. Renderpeople owns one of the most advanced photogrammetry scanners in the world. 250 Canon DSLR cameras capture even the most subtle details of skin, hair, and clothes. Continuously developing our state-of-the-art technology is the key to improving the realism of our 3D People.

3D Scanning

3D Scanning (more specifically 3D photogrammetry scanning) is at the heart of how we produce 3D People. This state-of-the-art technique has become more and more popular over the past few years, as it is one of the most realistic methods for transferring real objects into 3D space. When it comes to complex organic shapes like humans, animals, or plants, 3D photogrammetry scanning is capable of capturing even the most subtle details – like pores on skin.

The basic principle behind photogrammetry is quite simple: At one specific moment in time, numerous pictures from many specifically chosen angles are taken of an object, in our case a real human being. With all these photos and a bit of complex math, specialized 3D software is then able to reconstruct a 3-dimensional mesh. Since you’ve already got all these photos, you can then use them to project real-world textures onto the mesh.

With 250 high-resolution Canon DSLR cameras, the Renderpeople 3D scanner is currently one of the most advanced photogrammetry rigs in the entire world, allowing us to produce 3D People that look as realistic and vivid as real human beings.

Motion Capture

If you’re considering using 3D People, animation is a very important and highly interesting topic that you can’t miss. Long gone are the days when animated 3D characters were only used in games. Nowadays animated 3D People enliven all kinds of 3D environments and are essential for achieving an even more realistic look. This is why we offer Rigged People and Animated People.

When it comes to animation, we fully rely on capturing our own data with Xsens MVN Animate, a modern full-body wearable motion capture solution that produces cutting-edge results while allowing us to be flexible with where and what we capture. To achieve the best possible results, it is very important that our motion capture models actually walk upstairs, sit on a chair, interact with each other, etc., instead of just acting or pretending to do so. Our motion capture system gives us the necessary flexibility and freedom to do this easily. We also attach great importance to taking the individual characteristics of every person’s movement into account. This is the only possible way to express diversity and reflect reality.

Production

A great-looking but complicated product often does not meet the high demands and strict time constraints of professional production environments. The same applies to products that do not meet quality requirements. In order to tailor our products to the special needs of our customers, we attach particular importance to both of these aspects.

Photo Shoots

With more than 4,500 models, our 3D People library is not only the largest but also the fastest growing collection on the internet. It stands out for its variety and impresses with very natural looking poses. To achieve this high level of authenticity, we work closely with professional modeling agencies. All of our models are used to working in front of the camera and do not feel uncomfortable in our 3D scanner. This is the critical element that makes our 3D People look so realistic.

We know the needs of our customers and take care to always adhere to a modern and appropriate style of clothing that fits a wide range of 3D scenarios. Beyond that, when it comes to 3D visualization we know about the importance of human interaction. That’s why our scans all pay special attention to how the characters interact with their fellow human beings or their environment. Our fast and largely automated scanning workflow allows us to focus on these small but very important details during our photo shoots.

Refining

It’s extremely important to us that all our products meet the highest quality requirements without neglecting usability. To achieve this, our specialized 3D artists work with each and every single model after it has been scanned and before it is published.

In terms of quality this includes the manual refinement of the 3D-scanned geometry, motion-capture animations and all textures. We make sure to highlight small details while correcting any flaws that might result from the raw data. Our goal is always to achieve a natural and authentic look while maintaining an optimized topology, clean UVs, crisp textures, and smooth animations.

When it comes to usability we make sure that all data is processed exactly the way our customers need it. One part of this process is that we provide pre-built materials for several different renderers within more than 8 different file formats. In other words, all of our 3D assets are ready-to-use and ready-to render. What’s more, we know the requirements and needs of professional production environments, so we also take performance into consideration when developing and creating our products. Providing lean and flexible 3D assets is the key to helping our customers succeed.
